Day 121: Analyzing a Sample Food Journal

A middle-aged woman with shoulder-length brown hair and glasses, sitting at a cozy kitchen table. She is wearing a casual sweater and smiling contentedly as she takes a bite of apple pie with a fork. The pie is on a white plate. The kitchen is warmly lit with rustic wooden cabinets, and there is a vase of fresh flowers on the table.

Hey everyone welcome back to my holistic journey!

Today’s lesson from PN was fascinating as we reviewed a sample food journal. It included a mixture of measured foods and hand portions. While it wasn’t entirely PN plate-friendly, it didn’t look too bad on the surface. However, there were some points of interest, such as 2 cups of orange juice with breakfast. Although that sounds healthy, it's often better to eat whole fruit rather than drinking juice due to the hidden sugars and lack of fiber in the juice.

I'm still focusing on using photos to track my meals and really am looking forward to this habit to be over. I don't enjoy it at all. While I am trying not to judge myself, I am finding that I am wanting to have more things like apple pie a couple of days in a row which is throwing off my PN plate goals. I know that it is just information but then I get annoyed. Happily the pie is gone now but still, it was a good visual reminder that I am a work in progress when it comes to my food choices and why I have avoided having too many temptations around so far.

Today's Workout

Today was a workout day with a combination of handheld weights, bodyweight exercises, and resistance bands. I’m really enjoying the progression of exercises in the program. I'm particularly looking forward to Friday’s workout, as it’s been my favorite in previous phases. I’m curious to see what new elements will be added.

Tornado Warning Adventure

Tonight, we experienced a tornado warning. The whole family trekked down to the basement and followed the storm updates on our phones. Thankfully, no tornado materialized, and after about an hour, Environment Canada lifted the warning. It’s been quite a few years since we’ve had such an alert, so it was a surprise to get that notification across all our phones.

Vermicomposting

I'm thinking about getting a vermicomposting system to help with my plants. My son said he would help as well. So many different options to choose from for the initial set up but I think I like the ones with trays and a catch at the bottom with a spigot for the worm tea.

What is vermicomposting?

Home vermicomposting is an eco-friendly method of recycling organic kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost using worms, typically red wigglers. By providing a controlled environment with a worm bin, bedding material, and regular feeding of kitchen scraps, vermicomposting accelerates the decomposition process, producing high-quality compost known as vermicast or worm castings. This nutrient-rich material enhances soil health, promotes plant growth, and reduces household waste, making it a sustainable and effective solution for gardeners and environmentally-conscious individuals.

Looking Ahead

I am looking forward to this habit being over. I think that I will revisit it again when I have a better thought process around it.

Day 24: Valentine's Reflections and Embracing Every Moment

Welcome back, followers of well-being! A Surprising Lesson on Binge Eating Valentine's Day brought with it an unexpected lesson from the program, focusing on the concept of binge eating. The lesson didn't delve into definitions but rather suggested an intriguing approach: if binge eating occurs, do it slowly and without any guilt. For those who don't experience binge eating, the guidance was to maintain the practice of eating slowly throughout the day. This perspective offers a unique lens on mindfulness and self-compassion, encouraging us to be present and intentional with our eating habits, regardless of the situation. The Continual Growth Through Meditation Today's workout seamlessly blended meditation with walking, a combination that has become a cherished part of my routine. The guided meditations, each building upon the last one, have become a source of solace and anticipation. Their evolving nature keeps me engaged and hopeful that they'll remain a cornerston...

Day 27: Braving the Cold and Envisioning the Future

A Chilly Start to the Day Today's active recovery day took us back to the familiar yet frosty surroundings of the lake, with temperatures dipping to -15°C. Despite bundling up, the biting wind made our 20-minute walk more challenging than usual. The vast openness of the lake's paths and parks, usually a source of tranquility, today amplified the cold. To compensate for the lack of zone minutes on my Fibtbit, I added a 25-minute rowing session on my Bowflex Revolution in the afternoon, following a snow shoveling session under the watchful eye of my dog. Our day concluded with another walk after dinner, maintaining our routine despite the cold. Active recovery decoded and why you need it. Looking Ahead: The Maintenance Phase Today's lesson shifted our focus to the future, specifically the maintenance phase post-program. It outlined the gradual build-up of habits that will eventually become second nature, requiring no conscious effort to maintain. The lesson encouraged us to e...

Day 5 of Precision Nutrition Coaching: Transforming Desires into Actions

Welcome back, to all my readers! Today marked the fifth day of my journey with the Precision Nutrition (PN) Coaching program and like each day before, it was truly educational. The central theme of today's lesson was about transforming our "I don't wants" into "I do wants," a powerful shift in mindset that propels us from passive wishing to active doing. Flipping the Script: From "Don't" to "Do" It's easy to get caught in the trap of saying things like, "I don't want to be out of shape." However, this approach is often unproductive. Today's lesson taught me to reframe these thoughts into positive affirmations. Instead of focusing on what I don't want, I'm learning to focus on what I do want, like being in better shape. This simple flip in wording makes a significant difference in how I approach my goals. Vision Boards and Letters to the Future The course also introduced some creative tools to visualize an...
