Day 124: Red Wiggler Worms and Active Recovery

A woman is exercising on an indoor rowing machine in a spacious home gym. She is focused and wears a tank top and leggings. The gym features wooden flooring and large windows that allow natural light to fill the room. Around her, there are various pieces of gym equipment, including dumbbells, a yoga mat, and an exercise ball, creating a clean, modern, and motivating environment that emphasizes a healthy lifestyle.

New Worm Farm

Today, we picked up the red wiggler worms for our new worm farm. The woman who sold them was incredibly helpful, offering tips for the best possible start. She even included some of the bedding and castings, which will help the worms acclimatize to their new bin. Seeing her worm farm in the kitchen and noticing it didn't smell at all was reassuring. I have ours set up in the kitchen for now, and I'm relieved to confirm that there shouldn't be any odors.

Vermicomposting has nothing but good things when it comes to gardening and houseplants so I am really looking forward to not only diverting the food from the green bin program but having faster compost compared to my regular bin outside. I have already had someone offer to take some of the castings off of my hands for their gardens so clearly this is something that people are interested in and use locally.

She also introduced me to laughing yoga, which I had never heard of before. It sounds like a fun way to connect with people, so I'm planning to join one of her live sessions soon over Zoom. She does live session in her backyard but it is a bit far for me to go right now in the middle of the day.

Active Recovery Day

Today was an active recovery day. It poured rain this morning, so we did indoor training and chase games with the dog. In the afternoon, we took a nice walk to the lake. I successfully got the muzzle on the dog outside for the second time, and she was okay with it. I'm hoping to take her for a longer walk tomorrow with it on, especially since her vet appointment is this week so I want her to experience wearing in different places and on the leash. I also did a session on my rowing machine that is part of my Bowflex Revolution machine before I went to bed as I felt like I had a bunch of energy at the end of the day today.

Managing Scar Discomfort

I woke up with my large scar itching from the dead bug exercises yesterday which I thought might happen as there was a lot of pulling as I was doing them. Applying some coconut oil seemed to help alleviate the discomfort. It's been a while since it has bothered me like that, so I'm thankful for the relief.

Looking Ahead

Overall, today was productive and fulfilling, with positive steps in both my new worm farm project and my active recovery routine. Tomorrow, I'll continue focusing on getting the dog comfortable with her muzzle and preparing for her vet visit. Additionally, I'll be keeping an eye on my scar and ensuring it stays comfortable during my activities. Excited to see how the worms settle in and to potentially try out laughing yoga soon!

Day 27: Braving the Cold and Envisioning the Future

A Chilly Start to the Day Today's active recovery day took us back to the familiar yet frosty surroundings of the lake, with temperatures dipping to -15°C. Despite bundling up, the biting wind made our 20-minute walk more challenging than usual. The vast openness of the lake's paths and parks, usually a source of tranquility, today amplified the cold. To compensate for the lack of zone minutes on my Fibtbit, I added a 25-minute rowing session on my Bowflex Revolution in the afternoon, following a snow shoveling session under the watchful eye of my dog. Our day concluded with another walk after dinner, maintaining our routine despite the cold. Active recovery decoded and why you need it. Looking Ahead: The Maintenance Phase Today's lesson shifted our focus to the future, specifically the maintenance phase post-program. It outlined the gradual build-up of habits that will eventually become second nature, requiring no conscious effort to maintain. The lesson encouraged us to e...
