Day 92: It's all Feedback

An older man enjoys an active recovery day by canoeing alone on a wide river or small lake, symbolizing tranquility and gentle exercise. Early spring in Ontario, Canada, is captured with budding trees and sparse foliage along the shore, where ducks observe quietly. People dressed in seasonal pants and jackets walk along a nearby trail, partaking in mild outdoor activities in the cool, refreshing air. The setting conveys a peaceful retreat into nature, ideal for rejuvenation.

Embracing Feedback Over Failure

Today’s Precision Nutrition lesson today emphasized the shift from viewing mishaps as failures to seeing them as valuable feedback. Using examples like if you stumbled on a rocky path, it just means you found a rock that wasn't steady—no worries, you haven't failed at walking. This one really hit home to me, I use something similar when I am working with mums as a lactation consultant - if you latch the baby in X position and it doesn't work for one of you, that doesn't mean you have failed at breastfeeding.

Their gym example, if you lose your balance in the gym trying a new exercise, it's just a sign you might have leaned a bit too far one way. That's not failing at exercise, that's learning to balance better. And if those super spicy wings gave you a tough night, well, you've just learned what doesn't work for your stomach. You haven't failed at eating; you've just discovered more about your body's reaction to that food.

At the end of the day, remember, none of these are failures. They're all just part of the learning process, giving you valuable feedback to help you along your way. It is easy to forget and be hard on yourself when something doesn't go perfectly, I know because I am my toughest critic, trying to be my own best friend as much as I can.

Active Recovery and Observations

My active recovery day involved usual activities like walking the dog at the lake, where we saw someone in a canoe for the first time this year and engaging in NEAT activities like gardening - so much to get ready before the frost stops coming at night - thankfully Costco has delivery of the garden soil I like this week. For the first time, the portal encouraged documenting our active recovery activities that we did today. I document them on my blog, but it interesting how the program takes the tiniest steps every day to encourage our own personal progress.

My Quest for Instant Iced Tea

So far, I have tried two recommended options for cold brew iced tea and a powdered unsweetened iced tea mix. I do like the Celestial Seasoning black tea that you can just put into the glass with some water and ice and let it brew there. I tried the TEAki Hut instant black tea powder for the first time this morning. My cup that I use is 16 oz and it recommended 1/8 of a teaspoon per 8oz so I added two - using the included measuring scoop. It mixed in fairly well but it was pretty weak in terms of what I had expected from the reviews about the taste, so will double that tomorrow and see if that is any better. Hope so as I really don't want to have to get tea from the U.S. shipped here on a regular basis.

My Cat's Assistance in Gardening

In a lighter moment, one of my indoor cats decided to join me outdoors, leading to a playful chase with the dog - they play together like this in the house, but this is the first time I have seen it outside. This unexpected helper made the day’s gardening more amusing, though it took some effort to coax her back inside using a new food topper from Costco - Just One Fish - Wild Salmon. She completely ignored the dog and followed the opened packager right back into the house. Our cats are indoor cats, so we only normally let them out on a leash in the backyard.

I just received the case of wild salmon packages this week and was actually thinking about taking it back to Costco as the salmon is not freeze dried/dehydrated - I have no idea why I thought it would be. But now it seems like this is a win for the cats and the dog loved hers too. I am happy that I don't have to save any open portion of the package as there is only 4oz in each one too.

Hormonal Challenges

The sudden arrival of my period brought intense cramps, disrupting my sleep overnight and early morning daily routine. Interestingly, since cutting out my daily mochas and thus reducing caffeine intake, I’ve noticed fewer premenstrual symptoms, I used to have three days of sore breasts to give me a head up which is making tracking my irregular cycle due to PCOS more challenging. To manage the pain and nausea, I opted for a gentler breakfast of a banana, peanut butter, and hemp seed smoothie, along with some Aleve.

Dog Toys and Muzzle Training

My son went to another PetSmart today to pick up another one of the Joyhound Crazy Comfy Latex Pig Dog Toy so that we now have a stockpile for the dog as she is really attached to it. The day also included a my dog bringing her toy pig with us in the car, to the lake for a walk which is a first. Normally she leaves the toy on the floor by the door when we go out. Ongoing muzzle training for veterinary visits is going well. She doesn't love it but she is happy to take it treats and put herself into the muzzle and then tolerates it for a few minutes. I have no idea how I would get this on her without my son's help so I'm glad he is here most days so we can try a few times a day.

Hints for Tomorrow

Sometimes they share with us a hint about the next lesson that is coming up in our lessons. Tomorrow promises new lessons on listening to our bodies, encouraging mindfulness and attunement to personal health signals as part of our nutritional journey. This holistic approach underscores Precision Nutrition's commitment to fostering not just physical health but emotional and psychological well-being and why I chose this program.

Today encapsulated the everyday application of nutritional science, personal health management, and the joy of life’s simpler moments with pets and family.

Day 24: Valentine's Reflections and Embracing Every Moment

Welcome back, followers of well-being! A Surprising Lesson on Binge Eating Valentine's Day brought with it an unexpected lesson from the program, focusing on the concept of binge eating. The lesson didn't delve into definitions but rather suggested an intriguing approach: if binge eating occurs, do it slowly and without any guilt. For those who don't experience binge eating, the guidance was to maintain the practice of eating slowly throughout the day. This perspective offers a unique lens on mindfulness and self-compassion, encouraging us to be present and intentional with our eating habits, regardless of the situation. The Continual Growth Through Meditation Today's workout seamlessly blended meditation with walking, a combination that has become a cherished part of my routine. The guided meditations, each building upon the last one, have become a source of solace and anticipation. Their evolving nature keeps me engaged and hopeful that they'll remain a cornerston...

Day 27: Braving the Cold and Envisioning the Future

A Chilly Start to the Day Today's active recovery day took us back to the familiar yet frosty surroundings of the lake, with temperatures dipping to -15°C. Despite bundling up, the biting wind made our 20-minute walk more challenging than usual. The vast openness of the lake's paths and parks, usually a source of tranquility, today amplified the cold. To compensate for the lack of zone minutes on my Fibtbit, I added a 25-minute rowing session on my Bowflex Revolution in the afternoon, following a snow shoveling session under the watchful eye of my dog. Our day concluded with another walk after dinner, maintaining our routine despite the cold. Active recovery decoded and why you need it. Looking Ahead: The Maintenance Phase Today's lesson shifted our focus to the future, specifically the maintenance phase post-program. It outlined the gradual build-up of habits that will eventually become second nature, requiring no conscious effort to maintain. The lesson encouraged us to e...

Day 5 of Precision Nutrition Coaching: Transforming Desires into Actions

Welcome back, to all my readers! Today marked the fifth day of my journey with the Precision Nutrition (PN) Coaching program and like each day before, it was truly educational. The central theme of today's lesson was about transforming our "I don't wants" into "I do wants," a powerful shift in mindset that propels us from passive wishing to active doing. Flipping the Script: From "Don't" to "Do" It's easy to get caught in the trap of saying things like, "I don't want to be out of shape." However, this approach is often unproductive. Today's lesson taught me to reframe these thoughts into positive affirmations. Instead of focusing on what I don't want, I'm learning to focus on what I do want, like being in better shape. This simple flip in wording makes a significant difference in how I approach my goals. Vision Boards and Letters to the Future The course also introduced some creative tools to visualize an...
