Earth Day 2024

Today, on Earth Day, I'm reminded of the importance of my environmental impact and the role I play in preserving our planet. This annual event is a call to action to be more mindful of my daily habits and decisions, whether it's reducing waste, conserving energy, or practicing sustainable gardening. For me Earth Day serves as a reminder that even small, personal changes can contribute to a larger global effort to safeguard our natural resources for future generations.

Gardening and Sustainability

The day also included a moment of inspiration from a gardening show on the radio, reminding me of the simple steps we can take at home to practice sustainable gardening. I'm exploring options to install a gutter system on my greenhouse to connect to a rain barrel, aiming to use rainwater for watering plants. This sustainable practice underscores a commitment to leveraging natural resources effectively, reducing reliance on town water supplies that have been treated and the plants don't need that.

Self-Experimentation: A Learning Journey

Today's Precision Nutrition lesson revolved around the concept of self-experimentation. This approach isn't about dictating strict guidelines around diets but rather encouraging us to discover what uniquely works for each of us. The program reminds us that we are part of a continuous experiment—our lives. Whether it's identifying food sensitivities or observing how different foods affect our energy levels, the lesson underscored the importance of observation and adaptation in our nutritional habits. This is exactly why I chose this program and it takes the pressure off, for me, to be perfect.

This is also a similar theme that is in the book, Intuitive Eating, that I am reading as well. We are the only ones that can figure out what sort of foods work for us and why but in order to that that, we need to experiment and really tune into what our body tells us after eating or drinking.

Finding the Perfect Backup Toy

Amidst the day's adventures was a quest to find an exact duplicate of my dog's favorite toy—a Joyhound latex pig that has become her constant companion for over a month - she sleeps with it sometime in her mouth, carries it on walks has it nearby all the time. She had never done that with a toy before so when it started to lose its squeak I thought I should get another one. Discovering the toy was nearly sold out everywhere in the entire province last night added urgency to the search, leading me to drive over an hour to secure not just one but four of these prized possessions at a store in the GTA. This journey also presented a wonderful opportunity to catch up with my sister over lunch, combining errands with precious family time as she happened to work 10 minutes away from that PetSmart!

Launching a New Workout Phase

Alongside daily life adventures, today marked the beginning of a new phase in my workout routine. The focus remains on resistance bands and bodyweight exercises, maintaining consistency with the warm-up and cool-down sequences while introducing a few new exercises. Anticipating that this will be my routine for the upcoming Mondays adds a structured yet refreshing element to my fitness regimen and I look forward to seeing what Wednesdays and Fridays exercises will be. Once I have the full set of them, I will write a post to have them for future reference as these make excellent vacation exercises with almost no equipment - the bands will pack nicely in a carryon.

Continuing Habit - Healthy Fats

The ongoing focus on healthy fats makes this habit easier to maintain compared to the smart carbs challenge. My diet already includes healthy fats like avocado oil, guacamole, pesto, olive oil, and coconut oil. The habit of integrating these fats has become more straightforward, especially compared to incorporating smart carbs, where I've had to be creative with meals like chili to increase my bean intake.

Reflecting on a Productive Day

Today was a blend of personal errands, visits with family, and stepping into new routines that promote both physical health and environmental sustainability. Each element of the day was a step in my ongoing experiment with life, learning more about myself and how to make better choices that reflect my values and needs.

Day 24: Valentine's Reflections and Embracing Every Moment

Welcome back, followers of well-being! A Surprising Lesson on Binge Eating Valentine's Day brought with it an unexpected lesson from the program, focusing on the concept of binge eating. The lesson didn't delve into definitions but rather suggested an intriguing approach: if binge eating occurs, do it slowly and without any guilt. For those who don't experience binge eating, the guidance was to maintain the practice of eating slowly throughout the day. This perspective offers a unique lens on mindfulness and self-compassion, encouraging us to be present and intentional with our eating habits, regardless of the situation. The Continual Growth Through Meditation Today's workout seamlessly blended meditation with walking, a combination that has become a cherished part of my routine. The guided meditations, each building upon the last one, have become a source of solace and anticipation. Their evolving nature keeps me engaged and hopeful that they'll remain a cornerston...

Day 27: Braving the Cold and Envisioning the Future

A Chilly Start to the Day Today's active recovery day took us back to the familiar yet frosty surroundings of the lake, with temperatures dipping to -15°C. Despite bundling up, the biting wind made our 20-minute walk more challenging than usual. The vast openness of the lake's paths and parks, usually a source of tranquility, today amplified the cold. To compensate for the lack of zone minutes on my Fibtbit, I added a 25-minute rowing session on my Bowflex Revolution in the afternoon, following a snow shoveling session under the watchful eye of my dog. Our day concluded with another walk after dinner, maintaining our routine despite the cold. Active recovery decoded and why you need it. Looking Ahead: The Maintenance Phase Today's lesson shifted our focus to the future, specifically the maintenance phase post-program. It outlined the gradual build-up of habits that will eventually become second nature, requiring no conscious effort to maintain. The lesson encouraged us to e...

Day 5 of Precision Nutrition Coaching: Transforming Desires into Actions

Welcome back, to all my readers! Today marked the fifth day of my journey with the Precision Nutrition (PN) Coaching program and like each day before, it was truly educational. The central theme of today's lesson was about transforming our "I don't wants" into "I do wants," a powerful shift in mindset that propels us from passive wishing to active doing. Flipping the Script: From "Don't" to "Do" It's easy to get caught in the trap of saying things like, "I don't want to be out of shape." However, this approach is often unproductive. Today's lesson taught me to reframe these thoughts into positive affirmations. Instead of focusing on what I don't want, I'm learning to focus on what I do want, like being in better shape. This simple flip in wording makes a significant difference in how I approach my goals. Vision Boards and Letters to the Future The course also introduced some creative tools to visualize an...
